Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan captured his 67th five-wicket haul to force India to follow on in the first test.
Muralitharan, playing his final test, took the last two India wickets early in the middle session of day four Wednesday to bowl out India for 276 - 44 runs short of avoiding the follow-on.
The wickets moved Muralithan to 797 test wickets, closing in on becoming the first man to take 800.
Having claimed the key wickets of Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, Muralitharan added the scalps of tailenders Pragyan Ojha and Abhimanyu Mithun to give Sri Lanka a chance of victory in a match which had lost almost four sessions to rain.
